The skill is passed down from generation to generation within a family. In the first step of making bone inlay furniture, camel bone is collected, and pieces are hand-carved to give them a delicate shape. Next, the bone pieces are affixed on the wooden furniture frame to create intricate patterns. In the third and final step, the spaces around the bone are filled, typically with a colored resin background. Animals are not harmed in order to make bone inlay furniture.
